Need to find peace and heal yourself in the quiet? Not too far from the town of Dilijan, Haghartsin is a must place to visit. It is one of Armenia’s most famous monasteries, where amazing nature and the beautiful architecture combine perfectly.
WHERE IS IT LOCATED?
Being part of the Tavush region, it should come as no surprise that Haghartsin is located near mountains and trees. Armenians like to build churches virtually everywhere, be it a town, or out in the nature; it usually turns out to be a mesmerizing piece of work. And Haghartsin is no exception.
The beauty of Tavush’s nature is something to see with your eyes and to experience for yourself. Standing in front of so many trees and mountains with a view of a monastery complex in front of you, feels like you are almost in a movie. You feel small yet powerful to be standing between two masterpieces - the nature and the building’s architecture.
The closest town is Dilijan, and the Haghartsin Dilijan distance is about 15 minutes by car (around 12 km).
HISTORY
Built in the 12-13th century, Haghartsin monastery complex will impress you with its ancient history.
The legend says that the way it gained the name Haghartsin was for the two main roots “hagh” which means game and “artsiv” which means eagle in Armenian. It is believed that an eagle was flying above the dome of the monastery, and playing around it, and that is how the name was derived.
As an ancient monastery, Haghartsin has undergone through a major renovation in 2011. It now has clearly paved road leading to it, gift shops are around, and it is way easier to take a short trip to the monastery, if you are staying nearby in Dilijan.
STRUCTURE
The Haghartsin monastery consists of three churches: Saint Astvatsatsin (the main church), Saint Stepanos and Saint Grigor. Saint Astvatsatsin has a layout of looking like a cross. It has adopted the style of an Armenian domed church, rising with four arches, with no columns.
The monastery also has two gavits (one being severely ruined), chapels and some cross stones (khachkars).Be sure to also check out the most fascinating part of the monastery - the refectory.

For such a small country, Armenia has countless examples of breathtaking architecture, each distinctive and different from one another. The country has been around since the beginning of time, and it is fascinating to see the changes in Armenian architecture throughout the centuries. Welcome to the wonderful mix of the old and the new!
ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE
Armenian ancient architecture goes back to as far as 9th century BC to the Urartian period. The buildings from this era are mostly ruined but have remains as tourist attractions. The only architecture piece standing strong is the Garni pagan temple (the dominant view is that it was built in 77 AD) which has gone through major reconstruction. From the outside, the buildings looked rich and almost perfectly built. Inside, the decorations were the main pillar of the buildings.
As this historical time is on the same era as the bloom of Greco Roman architecture, many of the architecture pieces were influenced by their style. However, as Armenians adopted Christianity in 301 AC, the new churches brought with them a breath of fresh air.
MEDIEVAL CHURCHES
The new medieval churches became more distinctive in their structure. Many of the churches had pointed domes, as in the volcanic cone of the Greater Ararat. Some of them had semi-pointed domes that are also clearly concentrated more on the height than the length of the church, so the it is usually exceeding the length. The windows are very much narrow and tall, and the main material to build these churches are basalt and tuff. Carvings on Armenian churches are just beautiful - they are usually sentences, or ornates, such as grapevine and foliage.
A great showcase example of a medieval church is the Ejmiatsin Cathedral. The biggest and the main center of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the cathedral is considered to be a masterpiece not just for Armenian architecture, but it glows among others in the world. It was originally believed to have been built in the 4th century, then renovated and modified in the 17th and lastly undergone some changes in the nineteenth century. So, it collects the influence of many time periods in the Armenian architecture, just like many other churches do in the country.
MODERN DAY CHURCHES
Nowadays, the churches of Armenia have mainly adopted what was initially built in the medieval times, with slight touches of modern architecture influence. Check out the Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan. This huge building consists of the Main Church, two chapels, and a belfry tower. Just like many of the churches in the country, it is built on a high altitude, proudly looking down the city from high above.

THE CABLEWAY EXPERIENCE
Wings of Tatev (TaTever in Armenian) holds the Guinness World Record for the longest non-stop double track cable car. It is located in Syunik region, about 250 km south from Yerevan. Built in 10 months and installed in 2010, the cableway is fairly new but has already attracted more than 100,000 visitors annually. It connects Halidzor station to Tatev Monastery and lasts for about 12 minutes. It goes over the Vorotan gorge and reaches its maximum altitude of 320 meters. TATEV MONASTERY
Once you have reached to Tatev Monastery, expect to witness a breathtaking view all around. This 9th century monastery is one of the staples of tourism in Armenia and the ultimate destination for Syunik region. The complex holds a big history inside its walls, namely operating Tatev University in the 14-15th centuries.

Armenian Art

Artists used light and bright colours of yellow, orange and red tones in their artwork. The figures of the saints were depicted in canonical poses according to Christian iconography.
Armenian artistic ceramics, fabrics, lace and carpets received worldwide fame. The art of carpet making originated in Armenia in ancient times. Masters made carpets decorated with various patterns, in the plots of which figures of dragons and eagles were used, later they began to use images of a cross and slender trees, as well as floral and geometric patterns.

You have decided to take a road trip and explore the different sights of Armenia. Only about 1.5-2 hour drive from Yerevan, Yeghegnadzor has so much to offer!
So what should you see before you get to city, once you are there, what are the best places to eat and drink, as well as stay a night or two in Yeghegnadzor?
WHAT TO SEE
Leaning towards the south of the country, Yeghegnadzor weather is usually temperate and mild. It is the center of Vayots Dzor region which stands out for its unusual nature. So as you take the road trip, look around and see the unique composition of rocks and trees on your way.
On the road to get to Yeghegnadzor is Areni –a village that is most famous for its wine production history. In any step of the road are sold various homemade wines – starting from flavors of classic grapes to even peach and raspberry. If you are interested in learning more on how wine is made in this region, take a tour at Areni Wine Factory or other wineries in the village. Fun fact – about ten years ago, a 5500 year old leather shoe has been found at one of the caves in Areni, which is believed to be the oldest shoe in the world.
Around 5-6 kilometers away from Areni is Noravank – one of the most mesmerizing monasteries you will ever see in Armenia, with a view of the beautiful gorge all around. This ancient monastery was built in the 13th century and what stands out about it are the narrow stairs on church of Surb Astvatsatsin. You need to be brave and really have the nerves to climb through them to get to the second floor.
Once you have made it to the city of Yeghegnadzor, you should check out Vayots Dzor History Museum. It’s not big but it’s a very informative place about the region and its stories. Just outside, in Vernashen village is the Gladzor University Historical-Cultural Museum-Reservation, which displays the rich history of one of the oldest universities of Armenia.
WHAT TO EAT AND DRINK
Right in the city is the famous Yeghegnadzor Food Court. It is a very common stop for travelers that are either going to a place in Vayots Dzor or continuing their road even further to Syunik region and beyond. So, besides finding good food, you are likely to meet many foreigners who are exploring the country just like you.

Vernissage
Yerevan’s Flea Market is probably one of the best open-air markets in the world. It is called Vernissage (varnishing, from French) — a term used for a preview of an art exhibition.
A visit to the market could be a full day excursion on a beautiful weekend day where you will find everything from traditional Armenian jewellery, souvenirs, handicrafts to many other items for sale.
The Vernissage is the right place to get little taste of Armenia and a special spot to witness the fusion between national traditions and modern taste.
Vernissage is held behind Republic Square metro on Nalbandyan street, selling everything under the sun.
The Republic Square of Yerevan
If you are going to visit Armenia and its ancient capital Yerevan, then you should definitely visit the Republic Square, which is located in the centre of Yerevan and is considered one of the most amazing and famous places of the capital. Also called “the heart of Yerevan,” it is a favourite destination for tourists.
The construction of the square was performed by the main Armenian architect Alexander Tamanyan in 1924 and developed until 1958.
The Republic Square is situated in the centre of the city, near Abovyan, Amiryan, Nalbandyan, Tigran Mets, Vazgen Sargsyan streets. You can get there by bus, by a minibus or you can use an underground and get off at the station “The Republic Square”.
Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral
The St Gregory Armenian Church, also known as Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral is located in the centre of Yerevan. It is the largest Armenian apostolic church not only in Armenia but also in the world. Except for being magnificent and fascinating it also has a very interesting history.
