ON 29TH AND 30TH OF SEPTEMBER 2018 WE WILL CELEBRATE THE 2800TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE CAPITAL CITY OF EREBUNI – YEREVAN. Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. YEREVAN HISTORY Founded by the Urartian King Argishti I in the 8th century BC Yerevan is dating back to the times of Babylon and even is predating Rome and Carthage and used to be an important hub for the caravans routing from Asia to Europe. YEREVAN CUNEIFORM INSCRIPTION The city’s name Yerevan is an evolution of its former name Erebuni. Archaeological evidence, such as the famous cuneiform inscription, indicate that the Araratian fortress Erebuni was founded on the outskirt side of the current-day Yerevan to serve as a fort and citadel against attacks of the neighbouring rebels. The cuneiform inscription found in Erebuni Fortress says: "By the greatness of the God Khaldi, Argishti, son of Menua, built this mighty stronghold and proclaimed it Erebuni for the glory of Biainili [Van] and to instil fear amongst the king’s enemies. Argishti says: "The land was a desert before I accomplished the great works upon it. By the greatness of Khaldi, Argishti, son of Menua, is a mighty king, king of Biainili, and ruler of Tushpa." Nonetheless, the territory of Erebuni-Yerevan was settled much earlier. Fortified settlements dating back to the 4th millennium B.C. include Shengavit, Tsitsernakaberd, Teishebaini (Karmir Blour), Arin Berd, and Berdadzor. Thus, Yerevan is one of the most ancient cities in the world. During the height of the Araratian Kingdom, irrigation canals and an artificial reservoir were built in this area which is still in use! YEREVAN 2800 CELEBRATION In 2018 we will celebrate the 2800th anniversary of the foundation of the capital city of Erebuni-Yerevan. Celebrations will take place all around the city with live music, dance performances and other cultural activities.
